Mirror, Mirror on the wall

Hi all, I hope you’re all doing well… I thought I’d jump on the blog to talk about mirrors and how best to use them to make your home feel brighter and look bigger. Now the days are becoming lighter for longer and we’re coming out of our winter hibernation, we’re starting to pull back the curtains, whip up the blinds with squinted eyes to let the lovely sunlight in so I thought it would be a good time to explain how to use mirrors to get more natural day light into your homes.

Mirrors, when placed in the correct way really can be magical, they bounce light around a room, create an illusion of more space and can be a stunning, eye catching addition to your decor.

From freestanding, to wall hung right down to mirrored furniture they all play a roll In making your home feel larger and brighter.

My one rule is though, wherever you are looking to hang your mirrors PLEASE, PLEASE (yes I’m shouting at you).. PLEASE make sure the view the mirror will be reflecting is a worthy view, by this I mean a view from the outside if possible and not just a cluttered shelving unit or a blank wall.

Mirrors can be the perfect focal point to your room as they come in so many shapes, sizes, colours, traditional styles and modern ones.
They can double the appeal of a room through its reflections especially a view from outside.
Hanging a mirror opposite a window (if possible) is the best way to bring in more natural day light.
Mirrors work their magic the most in smaller spaces like hallways, bathrooms, utility’s and smaller bedrooms.
They also broaden narrow hallways by placing a large mirror or a few identical smaller mirrors side by side along a wall in a narrow hallway this will make it feel less cramped. They work great too near your front doors to check yourself before you leave the house or answer the door to anyone, just to make sure you don’t look like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards…or is that just me…?

In Feng shui though it says to avoid hanging a mirror opposite an entrance door, this is due to the energy entering your house, it’s to do with mirrors meeting the new energy coming in the front door, the mirror then catches it trapping it, then stopping the new energy on its journey to the rest of your house.

Mirrors are a must in dining rooms in Feng shui this represents your capacity to hold wealth… we all need a little of that in our lives.

Now…places to avoid hanging mirrors are known to be… above a bed, sofa or chair this is mainly to avoid injuries but also the feeling of heaviness above you when you sleep or relax on the sofa isn’t a nice feeling to have.

Ideal places are next to the bed , opposite a window and above a mantle piece. Freestanding mirrors look especially stunning propped up against the wall in dressing rooms or a little corner of the bedroom.

Some of my go to places online for mirrors are;

William wood mirrors

IKEA

Olivias

Amara

H&M Home

Zara Home

La Redoute

TK Maxx

Or you can look at your local independent interior shops or even better antique shops for that all important unique focal point mirror.

So that about wraps up my little mirror lesson.
Thank you so much for reading, I hope I’ve made your mirror hanging decisions a little easier. Happy mirror shopping and hanging but please don’t break one, that’s seven years bad luck you know…none of us need that at the moment.
Take care,

Bye for now
