Anchoring your Interiors

Hi there, I hope you’re all well… Welcome to my blog about Anchoring your Interiors and I’m not talking about anchoring a ship either, I’m not taking you on a cruise or asking you to place anchors around the house or anything like that, bear with me on this one…

When designing spaces the Anchors in designs are usually the largest items of furniture, so your sofa in the living room is usually the largest item or your dining table in the dining room and your bed in the bedroom, even your larger rugs etc…

…These anchors are the items that your eyes are drawn to in a space because they are the largest and really should be seen as the foundation to your design. Your larger items of furniture should be the most considered when budgeting your scheme, these items are usually the most expensive that you will purchase and the rest of the room should complement these anchors for your scheme to flow.
So choosing your larger items of furniture should be taken with a huge amount of consideration as you don’t want to be replacing these items very often, you want them to last and grow with you and your family and be used possibly in completely different homes too, if you choose to move house. So do your research and always check reviews on these expensive items and the places your purchasing from.

In the bedroom your bed would be the anchor and more importantly the headboard (if you choose to have one that is) would be the main part you would use for the foundation of the design, from the style and the colour. Like here in this bedroom scheme the grey colour in the headboard is then used in the throw, the cushions, the rug and even in the trim of the bedsheet and pillow cases, all in different tones and shades though to add interest. This is how anchoring your scheme works, making everything flow.
I’m not saying you have to match everything with the one main colour in the room, if your not afraid of colour and prefer a more colourful space, you can use two or three accent colours (other colours in a smaller proportion) within your scheme through the accessories but it helps to check if they are complimentary colours to each other or you could have too many colours clashing and possibly need your shades on around the house.

Colour wheel

Colour wheel

Incase your sat there thinking what is she waffling on about? Complementary colours are a pair of colours which, when combined and placed next to each other they create a strong contrast between the two colours.
For example on the colour wheel above, reds and greens , yellows and purples and oranges and blues are all positioned opposite one another on the wheel, showing they are the complementary colours for each other.

So it’s always good to check this when looking to create a colourful harmony within your schemes.

So this blog was just to say consider your larger items of furniture (Anchors) carefully. Invest a little more money into them as they will hopefully be with you for a long period of time. Consider the colours, would they still match other schemes if you fancy a change of colour in the room?. Also would finding accent accessories that complement the item of furniture be easy?.

Think about your accent colours and if they complement each other.
Also if your larger items are old, can they be painted? Or re-upholstered? to be updated rather than buying new items. ( Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).

If your struggling with choosing items or need advice you could always contact a lovely interior designer to help “cough , cough”. Just saying.
